It began with a flash of inspiration. It was 1825 in the tiny English village of Street in Somerset.
James Clark was busy working at the tannery owned by his brother, Cyrus. Among the sheepskin rugs, the off-cuts and cast-offs were piling up when James had a brainwave. “Slippers!” he exclaimed and the Brown Petersburg was born. Sales were soon averaging more than 1,000 pairs a month. Within a few years the brothers’ pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit was rewarded with two awards at the ‘Great Exhibition Of The Works Of Industry Of All Nations’. And so began a remarkable story of vision, innovation and invention.
We’re still based in Street and owned by the Clarks family but today we’re a truly global brand.
With 15,000 employees, we operate in no less than 75 countries – everywhere from Europe and the Americas to the Asia Pacific region. Designing, manufacturing, retailing, wholesaling and selling online, by sales volume we are the world’s biggest everyday footwear brand; a £1.54 billion business.
Our history is important to us – our innovations, iconic styles and the reputation we’ve earned for helping to keep feet healthy – but our eyes are fixed firmly on the future. We change with the times, reviewing, evolving and reinventing the products and services we offer in response to new challenges and new opportunities.
And we never lose sight of the fact that the success of Clarks would not be possible without the creativity, dedication and commitment of our people.
